Wilson Records 1,000th Strikeout Friday, August 7th
Ironmen pitcher Derek Wilson recorded his 1,000th career strikeout in the
fifth inning of last night's 8-1 victory over the Fredericton Royals. Wilson's punchout of Royals'
centerfielder Corey Stairs marks the first time a pitcher has reached the 1,000 strikeout mark. The milestone came on
Wilson's best start of the season, as he picked up the complete game victory, scattering five hits and two walks, with
six strikeouts.
Hardy, Jardine to be Inducted to Honour Roll Wednesday,
August 5th
Ron Hardy and Willie Jardine will be inducted to the
Chatham Ironmen Honour Roll during Saturday night's doubleheader with the Saint John Alpines. The Honour Roll was
started in 2006 to honour former Ironmen greats.
Longtime Ironmen catcher Ron Hardy's career lasted four decades
from 1979-2002. Known for his grit and strong arm behind the dish, Hardy's greatest moment may have been catching
the gold medal game of the 1995 Canadian Senior Baseball Championship for the hometown Ironmen. Hardy played an integral
role for the victorious Ironmen, throwing out the potential tying run in the sixth inning versus a strong Quebec team.
Hardy has also coached various minor baseball teams to provincial championships, and currently serves as an assistant coach
for the Ironmen.
Jardine was known as a versatile athlete, who starred for minor ball teams in the 1920s and 1930s.
In 1942, Jardine was a member of Monsignor Hickey's baseball team that defeated the United States 1-0 at the Allied Forces
Championships. Jardine returned home to star for the Ironmen in 1946, helping them capture the provincial championship
in 1950. Jardine would go on to coach the Ironmen for seven years before retiring in 1965. Following his retirement,
the midget field adjacent to Ironmen Field was named the 'Willie Jardine Field'.
