NBSBL Finals  Game 3:  Fredericton  1    Chatham  0
Saturday, September 16th

Fredericton grabbed a 3-0 series lead with a tight 1-0 victory over the visiting Ironmen Saturday night at Royals Field.  John Burns tossed a complete game two-hitter for the Royals, walking one and striking out five.  The Ironmen wasted a great pitching performance by Mike Lewis, who also gave up two hits and struck out six.

Jody Peterson provided the game's only offence, hitting a solo home run to right field to lead off the second inning, which incidently was the last hit Lewis surrendered.  The Ironmen threatened in the first and sixth innings, but couldn't bring the tying run across the plate.  Nick Hardy and Andrew Burns singled for the Ironmen.

The Ironmen will look to extend the series Sunday night at Ironmen Field.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:30pm.

NBSBL Finals Game 2: Fredericton 9    Chatham  3
Thursday, September 14th

The Fredericton Peterbilt DQ Royals won 22 of their 30 games this season and proved they don't need any assistance in order to win games in the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League final.

The Chatham Ironmen gave them some help anyway.

The Ironmen surrendered five unearned runs to pave the way for a 9-3 victory by the Royals last night at Ironmen Field.

The Royals lead the best-of-seven league championship series 2-0. Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Royals Field while Game 4 will be played Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at Ironmen Field.

Ironmen general manager Daryl Matthews was disappointed with the loss, but quickly added the series was far from over.

"There were a couple of times when we gave them extra outs in an inning," Matthews said. "You just can't give away anything to these guys.

"Don't get me wrong. They have a solid team and they hit the ball well, but we didn't help ourselves. All we can do now is regroup and get ready for the next game. We're not going to roll over in this series."

Dan Murphy earned the complete game win. He struck out seven and walked three while scattering six hits.

Matt Jenkins was charged with the loss. In 3 2/3 innings, the veteran righthander gave up six runs, four of them earned. He struck out three, walked one and was tagged for seven hits before being relieved by Brian St-Coeur.

The Royals broke the game open in the fourth inning when they send 12 batters to the plate and scored six runs on just five hits.

Jody Peterson, whose two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth lifted Fredericton to a 2-0 win here Wednesday, led the Royals with three singles.

Chris Sorensen added a double and a single whle John Burns had two singles. Dave Barr doubled while Cory Stairs and Matt Stewart each chipped in with singles.

Tom Burns smashed a solo home run for the Ironmen. Nick Hardy added a double and a single while Jon Saunders, Tyson Waye and Jenkins each had singles.

NBSBL Finals Game 1:  Fredericton 2    Chatham  0
Wednesday, September 13th

Game one of the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League best-of-seven final series between the Fredericton Peterbilt DQ Royals was was advertised as a pitcher's duel and it delivered as promised.

Lefthander Josh Collins of the Royals and former major league all-star Jason Dickson of the Chatham Ironmen, the respective aces of their teams, went head to head, and an estimated 500 fans were treated to a pitching gem.

Collins came out the winner by a 2-0 score thanks to a two run home run by Jody Peterson in the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie.

The win gives Fredericton a 1-0 leg up in the series heading back to Miramichi tonight for a 7:30 start at Ironmen Field. Game three of the series is back in Fredericton Saturday evening although the exact start time has yet to be confirmed. Game four would be back in Miramichi Sunday with the rest of the series to be announced as needed.

Collins, the league's Most Valuable Player this season based on his 10-0 record and 0.74 earned run average, was on top of his game last night. Not that he had been far off in the semifinal against Saint John, but he lost a pair of games to Saint John ace Sherman Yeo.

"I was thinking it's been a lot of innings without a lot of runs on our side of the scoreboard," Collins said. "But that's what you have to expect come the playoffs and when you match up with the best pitcher on the other team a lot. It was the same tonight. Dickson threw a good game, but it was nice to see Jody put a couple of runs up on the board."

Collins went the distance, allowing only one runner to advance as far as third base. He gave up three hits and a walk while striking out three. In fact, he was perfect through four and two-thirds innings before Tyson Waye hit a two out double.

Dickson was almost as good, allowing two earned runs in six innings on five hits and a walk, he also hit two batters while striking out three.

Gary Ryder had the second Chatham hit with two out in the sixth and Collins worked out of the closest thing he had to a jam in the seventh.

Jon Saunders walked with one out and Al Hilchie rapped a single under the glove of second baseman Jon Pineo. Dave Whalen ran for Hilchie and was erased on a fielder's choice by Waye. Andrew Burns grounded out to end the game.

"I was getting a little over eager in that last inning," Collins admitted after barking at the home plate umpire when Saunders walked. "That's only natural in that situation. You really get eager to get it nailed down, I thought I had made a pretty good pitch, but it worked out. My emotions just got away a bit is all that was."

Peterson lined a 1-2 pitch over the right field fence for the game winner to cash in Dave Barr, who led off the inning with a single just over the glove of second baseman Waye.

"I felt pretty good against (Dickson) the first two times up," Peterson said. "But Jason is a former major leaguer. He doesn't make many mistakes. He might make one or two a night. I was just fortunate the one he may have hung over the plate all night was to me. I got a good hack at it and Josh did the rest from there."

The Royals' slugger was relieved to come through for Collins after "letting him down in those games against Saint John,"

"We felt we owed one to Josh, at least one," said Peterson.

"We went out tonight thinking Josh wasn't going to give any runs up so our job was to get at least one off Jason. It's always a huge part of a series when you can start off with your best pitcher beating their best pitcher."

Semi-Final Game 4:  Chatham  1    Moncton  0

Tuesday, September 5th

Jason Dickson tossed his second complete game shutout of the series and Alan Hilchie added all the offence the victors would need as the Ironmen completed a sweep agains the Moncton Mets with a 1-0 victory.  The Ironmen will now face the winner of the Fredericton - Saint John series in the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League final.

The seventh inning proved to be a tense one for the large crowd at Ironmen Field.  Rod Wilson Jr. led off the inning with a double, and was replaced by pinch runner Andrew Rinzler.  Dickson followed by striking out Dana Harquail and Mark Fournier to put the Ironmen one out away from victory.  An infield single by Mike Ivey seemed to prolong the inning, but Matt Jenkins made a heads-up play by throwing to third baseman Gary Traer to catch Rinzler taking a wide turn around third base.  Dickson finished allowing six hits and striking out four, outdueling his counterpart Dana Harquail.  Harquail tossed a complete game for the Mets, allowing five hits and striking out four.

The lone offence of the game came off the bat of Alan Hilchie.  With the score knotted at zero in the home half of the fifth inning, Hilchie drilled a 0-2 fastball from Hilchie into the trees in right field to put the Ironmen ahead to stay.  The other hits came off the bats of Tyson Waye, with two singles and Nick Hardy and Brian St. Coeur, with one single each.

The Ironmen got on the board in the fourth inning when Tom Burns led off with an infield single.  Cleanup hitter Jon Saunders followed by ripping a Derek Wilson offering for a double into the leftfield corner, scoring Burns.  The lead remained 1-0 until the sixth inning, when Tom Burns singled with one out.  Saunders followed with a ground ball to third base, but the Mets couldn't complete the double play.  Jenkins lined the first pitch from Wilson into rightfield for a single, leaving runners at first and second for Alan Hilchie.  Hilchie belted a double that short-hopped the centerfield wall, scoring Saunders and Jenkins, providing Lewis with all the insurance he would need.  Hilchie's double chased Wilson, who was charged with three runs on five hits in a losing cause.

Game four is now scheduled for Tuesday night at Ironmen Field.  Game time is 7:30pm.

Semi-Final Game 2:  Chatham  5    Moncton  2

The Ironmen coupled their second strong pitching performance in as many nights with the longball to grab a 2-0 series lead over the Moncton Mets with a 5-2 victory at Ironmen Field.  Matt Jenkins shut down the Moncton bats, scattering six hits and one earned run to earn the complete game victory.  Jenkins struck out twelve Mets over seven innings and did not walk a batter.

The Ironmen opened the scoring in the first inning when Tom Burns belted a Matt Cheney offering over the rightfield wall to give the Ironmen a 1-0 lead.  Moncton answered in the top of the second inning when Jenkins' errant pickoff attempt to first base scored Jody Cole from third.  Chatham answered right back in the home half of the second when Darren Hardy roped a three-run homer into the mesh above the leftfield fence.  Jon Saunders added an insurance marker in the third inning, when he knocked a homerun to right-center field.  Moncton would add one run in the fifth inning, but that proved to be all the offense they could muster off Jenkins.  Cheney was charged with the loss, working into the fifth inning, giving up three hits, all homeruns, walking five and hitting three Ironmen.

Mike Lewis will take the ball for the Ironmen when the series resumes Sunday evening in Moncton at 7:00pm at Kiwanis Park.
